Why So Many People Nibble on the Inside of Their Lips

Posted on 1/25/2018 by Dr. Johnson
Oral Hygiene Total Health Dental OR 97224-2479It is very important to practice good oral hygiene every day. Making sure you brush at least twice a day and floss once a day.

You can use a mouthwash or water pic in addition to make sure you're getting rid of as much bacteria as possible.

Sometimes, however, we can have some bad habits that we don't realize we have. One of those habits is biting your lips or chewing your cheeks. There could be a couple different reasons you have picked up this habit. Let's talk about what can cause us to do this and how to break the habit.

Why Do People Chew Their Cheeks and How Does This Habit Affect Your Oral Health?

If biting your lips or chewing your cheeks is a habit you have picked up, don't feel like you're alone. It turns out a lot of people do this. Chewing your cheeks usually tells people around you that you are super stressed out. That could be one of the reasons.

It can be a nervous habit that you've picked up without even realizing it. Another reason could be maybe you have a tooth missing and now you chew differently and your cheeks get in the way. I'm sure at some point you have bitten down on your cheek while eating and now it hurts.

You most likely will remember it's there and leave it alone and in a couple days you won't even think about it. If you have a more chronic problem with chewing there might be something else going on.

Now it's time to give us a call so we can take a closer look. You may have an alignment issue, meaning your teeth don't line up the way they should. If your teeth don't sit properly, it is possible that your cheeks just have no place to go but in between.

This can cause bleeding and discomfort. It can also cause soreness to your jaw from straining to get away from that area while you eat. Overall, it puts a lot of extra work on your muscles and jaw.

It can cause infection in your mouth and could lead to other problems. Making sure that you stay on top of good oral hygiene is the first step to good overall health. Things that start happening in your mouth can lead to other medical conditions.

Anytime you have an infection, if not treated properly and right away, it can spread to other areas. Let's face it, when you're not feeling your best it can affect your whole day as well as your attitude and may even affect the people around you.

We want you to feel at your best all the time. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing you smile. The good news is, we have ideas to help you break this habit. If you like to bite your lips try using a lip balm or Chapstick.

Tasting these will help remind you that you're doing it. If you are chewing your cheeks try eating slower. Maybe eating slower will help give time to focus on staying away from those sensitive areas.

Please remember our goal is to make sure you look your best and feel your best. The sooner we address any concerns with you, the better. It is going to save you time spent in the office and money in the long run. Stop in or give us a call and we can go over some ways to help you break the habit.

Make sure to schedule regular visits with us so we can make sure there are no other issues going on too. For any other questions, call us anytime, we will be happy to assist you.
