Protecting Your Teeth When The Flu Ravages Your Body

Posted on 12/13/2017 by Dr. Johnson

The flu is one of the most awful illnesses there is. It ravages your whole body making you not able to do anything but lay around and sleep.

If you get sick with the flu, you still need to take care of your teeth. It is important to do this, even if you do not feel like it. Here are some ways to care for your oral health while you are sick with the flu.

Continue to Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Although you may not feel like doing this every day while you are sick with the flu, it is important to continue to care for your teeth and gums.

You can do this by brushing your teeth twice per day, flossing regularly, and visiting your dentist whenever necessary.

Use Sugar Free Cough Drops
Instead of sugar filled cough drops, try using the sugar free ones instead. The reason for this is because the ones that have sugar in them are like eating candy and anything with sugar can cause cavities.

Make sure to read the label on the bag of cough drops before buying them so you do not end up with cavities in your mouth while you are caring for your illness.

Rinse Your Mouth Out After Vomiting

When you have the flu, you know you are going to be vomiting. Anytime this happens, you will need to swish and spit, or rinse your mouth out to get rid of the bacteria that is in your mouth after vomiting.

Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to stay hydrated while you are sick. You can also drink some juices but mostly water. This will help ensure you do not get a dry mouth while you are sick. Having a dry mouth can cause bad breath.
