When jaw pain comes on out of nowhere, it can be really hard to keep moving. Jaw pain can be completely debilitating. Instead of helping you feel better, some medications can even make the pain worse.

No matter what you try to do, there are just no easy answers. Sometimes ice helps, other times it increases the pain. Eating hurts, but after a while, you simply get hungry and thirsty and can't hold out. So, what options do you have to manage the pain?

Consider These Options if Your Jaw Hurts

When you get that awful jaw pain, the first thing you need to do is call your dentist. The pain is going to be easier if someone can figure out a way to determine the cause and a subsequent treatment for it. Tell them what is going on, and let them tell you what options they would recommend until you get in to see the dentist.

Next, try an over-the-counter ibuprofen type product. Acetaminophen often increases pain in the face and jaw because it has been shown to increase pressure in the face. If you are able to take an ibuprofen or naproxen sodium product, opt for one of those instead.

Try ice and see if it helps. For some people, it does. Put it on for about 10-15 minutes, then take it off for the same amount of time. If after one or two cycles it does make the pain worse, stop trying this option.

The best thing you can do until you get into see your dentist is to try and keep your jaw as still as you possibly can. The less you move it, the less it is going to hurt. If you develop a fever with this jaw pain, call your dentist back and get in to see them immediately. It could be an infection.
